May 1-3, 2009
The 2009 Chilliwack Jazz Festival is just around the bend. This year's fest promises to be an exciting one with new bands, dance floors, youth music and all the jazz you can handle.
Bands
Our world-class lineup includes some of today's best traditional jazz. Favourites Titan Hot Seven and Uptown Lowdown each make a return, along with our host band, Chilliwack's own Big Bang Jazz Band (formerly the 51st eight). This year we have added Cornet Chop Suey of St. Louis, a dynamic ensemble known as show-stoppers at festivals across North America. And we are pleased to have Company B—a fresh take on the music of the Andrews and Boswell Sisters—make their festival debut.
Youth Music
The next generation of jazz musicians will be highlighted throughout the weekend. Chilliwack's Dixie Nine made their first appearance at the Sun Valley Jazz Jamboree this fall and they return for '09 with experience at other major festivals including Sacramento and the Vancouver DixieFest. The next crop of young musicians are on their way and new groups from the local high school—including the Back Alley Strutters—will be featured along with Chilliwack's school groups on Saturday at our Youth venue.
Dancing
We continue our recent tradition of great dancing venues. Our venues all have first rate dance floors to go along with the first rate music. Our friends Joel and Louise will be teaching dance lessons as well as providing special floor shows throughout the weekend. If you are lucky you might just catch Joel and Louise leading our festival parade band, the Big Bang Brass Band, through the venues.
